Royal Canin Canada Company, an international pet food company, selected Carl A. Nelson to be its design-build partner for a new 5,270 sf quality control lab which will serve all Royal Canin's North American operations.
Royal Canin has standardized their facilities worldwide including their labs. Because of this, Carl A. Nelson & Company personnel visited a lab in Shanghai, China to maintain the standardization.
The building consisted of a conventional structural steel frame with site cast tilt-up concrete wall panels, which complemented the appearance of the other structures on this site. The laboratory utility systems included RO water, compressed air, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, helium, argon, acetylene, pure air and a central vacuum system. The casework included mobile steel cabinets, epoxy resin tops with glass work surfaces, marble weighing tables, constant volume canopy hoods and fifteen (15) variable air volume (VAV) enclosed fume hoods.
To make sure that the facility operated as efficiently as economically possible, the project included a VAV make up air system with direct digital controls (DDC) as well as a heat recovery wheel between the exhaust air and the fresh air. The heat wheel was constructed with molecular sieve to insure that contaminates in the exhaust air does not transfer to the fresh air.
