Carl A. Nelson & Company was engaged by Western Smokehouse Partners in May 2022 to lead the design-build renovation of a former steam turbine testing facility in Burlington, Iowa, for use as a meat snack stick production plant. A year later, the plant was in production following a 96,600 SF renovation that built a food-grade operation inside the existing footprint of the building.
The food industry firm selected CANCO based on the referral from an electrical contractor it works with at the plant in Galesburg, Illinois.
Renovations inside the facility included new structural steel to support the insulated metal panels installed to contain the food production areas of the plant, as well as installation of panels and equipment, including smokers; expansion of the shipping dock; and HVAC and electrical upgrades installed by CANCO-managed subcontractors. CANCO also led the design of the improvements and self-performed significant portions of the construction. Substantial completion was achieved within 11 months of Western Smokehouse Partners contacting Carl A. Nelson & Company to explore a partnership.
