In late 2018, Central Iowa Power Cooperative (CIPCO) determined it was in need of a new generation facility to augment its growing solar and wind energy infrastructure. Carl A. Nelson & Company was selected in 2019 to perform two contracts on the project. The first was in the design-build role to procure the steel for the new facility. Our team provided value engineering during pre-construction that enabled the Owner to switch from a pre-engineered metal building as specified to hybrid steel frame at a savings of both money and time on the project. Working as a trade contractor on the project, we erected the 20,000 SF engine hall — which contains three (3) natural gas piston engines delivering a combined 55 MW of generating capacity — and the 8,000 SF, storm-hardened regional operations center. The center includes dispatch and staging for line crews.
The project was featured in the Summer 2021 issue of our wibi newsletter.
