WASHINGTON, Iowa -- Hundreds of local residents joined leaders and supporters of the YMCA of Washington County inside the just-completed new aquatics center to celebrate the opening of the Carl A. Nelson & Company design-build project.

The ribbon-cutting and open house Dec. 10 marked the conclusion of an event 20 years in the making, when YMCA officials first reached out to CANCO to begin discussions about planning for a new facility to replace century-old quarters on the square downtown.

Following a lengthy planning, fundraising and design effort, construction of Phase 1, the new fitness and community center, began in 2018. After opening in 2020 to much enthusiasm, attention quickly turned to planning and raising money to build Phase II, the 15,000 SF, $8 million aquatics center. Ground was broken in July 2023, with only installation of bleachers and some landscaping in the spring yet to be completed at the time of the ribbon-cutting.

The center features a six-lane competition pool with a depth of 10 feet and lane length of 75-feet, 3/4 inches; a family recreation pool; an 11-person spa; and three saunas.
